Carving the Key Block

The Key Block contains the black outline of the image. In the traditional Japanese way, the image is smaller than the block to make room for the Kento registration marks carved at the bottom. These help to align the paper properly and are carved on every block.

Kento marks shown here

In this example, carving out the right corner and a straight line on the left keeps the paper aligned properly.

Color Blocks

The top block was carved to print three brighter color sections underneath the black. The bottom block was used to hold a stencil I cut to print the palest two colors - of the rocks and the reflection of the rocks. Printing is done light to dark with the black key block printed last.

Colors Printed

I printed all the colors first before overprinting the key block. These proofs show the print after the stencil and color block have been printed.
