This image was a part of the National “Big Ink” show held in Lynchburg, Virginia, October 5, 2018. The minimum size to enter was 24 x 36 inches. Entries are printed on a large format press that “Big Ink” transports from show to show nationwide.

Moku hanga on shina plywood printed with watercolor

Made by a Japanese printmaking technique called moku hanga. Uses watercolors on woodblocks. This required four blocks - one for each color or shade.

I carved three blocks, one for black, one for yellow/brown and one for blue.
The green was formed when I printed blue over yellow.

Moku hanga watercolor based print

I carved two shina plywood woodblocks (one for black and one for three of the colors - the blue sky, the green and the yellow green bands) and used a stencil for the pale pink of the rock and pale blue of the reflection. See Behind the Scenes section for a view of the blocks, stencil.
This image was inspired by a popular swimming reservoir in Tennessee.

Printed with oil based inks from 4 birch plywood blocks - one black and three primary colors, red, blue, yellow. Colors are literally mixed on the page as inks are printed one on top of the other. (See “Behind the Scenes ” for a view of the blocks.)
In this image, the basket comes alive while the flowers are innocent bystanders. : - )
